The Order of the Phoenix is a group of wizards gathered to fight Lord Voldemort. It was founded by Albus Dumbledore.
When Tom Marvalo Riddle began to use the name Lord Voldemort and declared war on the rest of the wizarding world, Albus Dumbledore created the Order of the Phoenix in an attempt to take control of the situation. It is unknown how long the Order ran for but before the starting of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone, they suffered great losses. The Prewitt's, Bones's and the McKinnon's were all murdered and Frank and Alice Longbottom were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange. When James and Lily Potter were killed the Order was temporarily disbanded.
Later on, at the very beginning of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore gathered the Order back together. They made their headquateres at Number Twelve, Grimmuld Place, Sirius Black's old house. Dumbledore was made the Secret-Keeper, meaning that only he could reveal the location of the Order's headquaters.
The Order of the Phoenix fought at the Ministry of Magic in the Department of Mysteries where they suffered another loss. Sirius Black was murdered there by Bellatrix Lestrange.
In the seventh and final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the Order turned it's attention to escorting Harry Potter from the Dursley house. During the escort Alastor Moody was murdered and George Weasley lost an ear. Some time after that terrible incident the Order set up a radio channel named, Potter Watch where the orginization provided the wizarding world imformation that they did not want Lord Voldemort or his followers to know.
When the battle at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was over, after Lord Voldemort's death, it is unknown whether they carried on running.
